I think Alfred was just lucky because his four brothers died and because King Guthrum converted to Christianity because he could have just killed him.
Was Alfred great or was he just lucky?
My opinion is both, he was great because he went into battle with his soldiers to back of the Vikings and try to make peace with them and share the land. Some Vikings loved the idea but some hated the idea, so they stayed on the Viking kings side. He was lucky because there was an illness going round but he survived it.
Was Alfred great or just lucky?
King Alfred was great because of his great defeat of the Vikings and no other Anglo-Saxon King had done that.King Alfred wasn’t a normal King in his day and he didn’t just sit there and order people to protect him he actually got involved and fought himself.Just because you have bottom paints and was unhygienic and let kids have Ale doesn’t mean you aren’t great. When the Vikings attempt to attack again he shared half of Wessex with them. Peace with the Vikings was hard in that time and that’s why he is great.
Kind Alfred is known to invent schools. He made sure everyone knew English, maths and Latin. He himself had been schooled until much later in his life. He made sure everyone had a proper education and that is what people do nowadays.
I think King Alfred was lucky and great. Lucky because he had 4 brothers who died and great because he made peace with the vikings.
Was Alfred gret or was he just lucky?
I think Alfred was great. He had to take over as King when they were fighting with the Vikings as his four older brothers died. He was able to defeat the Vikings with his army. Alfred was also clever and managed to hide in a peasant’s house when Vikings were attacking him. They could not find him because they did not think that a King would hide in peasant’s home.
I think that Alfred was great and lucky . He was a great leader and king and made peace with the Vikings and stopped them taking over Wessex. He was lucky because he did not get killed by the Vikings in battle.
Was King Alfred great or just lucky?
Viking defeat: Kind Alfred was great because he defeated the Vikings and no other Anglo Saxon King had done that. King Alfred wasn’t a normal King in his day and he didn’t just sit there and order people to protect him, he actually fought himself. Just because he had bottom paints and was unhygienic and burnt his cakes and let kids drink ale doesn’t mean he isn’t great. When the Vikings came back to fight Alfred shared half of Wessex with them. Peace with the Vikings was very hard in that time.
Schools: King Alfred is known to invent schools for he made sure that everyone knew English, Maths and Latin. He himself had been schooled until much later in his life . He made sure everyone had a proper education and that is what people do nowadays.

Was king Alfred great or just lucky?
I think a mixture of great and lucky .
I think he was great because he fout back the vikings and did not leave it to his army,he also invented school using English, maths and Latin. He gave proper education to people.
He is lucky because his four brothers died so he became king.
Wow some really thought provoking responses so far which show your great level of knowledge and your own opinions with great evidence. Well done everyone! I am really enjoying reading your thoughts! 😀
My opinion is he is both great and lucky. King Alfred is great because he went into battle and some other kings did not go into battle. He also set up schools so children could learn to read and write. Alfred is also great because he made peace with the vikings and shared his land with the vikings.
I think he is lucky because when his four brothers died he was made king.
I think Alfred was great and lucky because he made peace with the Vikings witch no other king did. Another reason for being great was he set up schools for reading and writing. I think he was lucky as well because he did not get killed in battle and he was also lucky he became King.
I think that king Alfred was just lucky for a few reasons. First, his older brouthers died, so he was next in line for the throne. Second, if he had got the desise that his brouthers had sufferd from he wouled be dead by now.Third, if the vikings hadent wanted to takeover England then he wouled have just sat back and relaxed in his throne.
Was Alfred great or just lucky?
King Alfred was a king during the Anglo Saxon times. He was the youngest of 5 brothers, therefore lucky because he wasn’t expected to be king. He outlived his brothers and became king in AD871.
There are lots of things about king Alfred that made him great:
He learned to read after his mother challenged her sons to recite a poem off by heart which he did.
Alfred regrouped and raised an Anglo Saxon army and defeated the Vikings at the battle of Edington.
King Alfred and Guthrum (Viking warlord) agreed to peace and to divide up the country. Over time Alfred brought the English Kingdoms together.
Alfred’s greatest achievement was translating Latin books into English so more people could read them. This is why Alfred became known as Alfred the Great.
Therefore, I believe King Alfred the Great was great.

Alfred was lucky to escape the Vikings when they came to capture him as he was enjoying Christmas.
After reforming his Army he beat the Vikings, without Alfred there would be no England or English language.
He ruled well and fairly and made good laws.
He made the villages safe and built warships to defend the coasts.
Alfred started a school, not only for his sons and the sons of nobles but also for poorer children, He thought everyone should have education.
He is the only King in history to be called great.
King Alfred was great because he drove off the vikings. He also went into battle with his army. Alfred made schools for boys as well.
I think Alfred was just lucky because he decided what would be in the
history books so he could have just pretended that he defeated the
Vikings and the Danes. If he actually did then he was still lucky
because his brothers died and if they didn’t he might not have been to
able to do any of those great things.
King Alfred was lucky because he won in battle when there were tons of Vikings and not many Saxons. He was also lucky because when he went to the Vikings to ask for peace they did not kill him. Also he became King after his brothers died, which was also lucky.
King Alfred was great because he defeated the Vikings but then he made peace with them so his people did not have to fight any more.
He was also lucky to become King because four of his brothers died.
I think king Alfred was lucky because his four brothers died so he had to take over when he was very young. I also think he was great because he defeated the vikings with his army and brought peace to England.
I think he was unlucky because would you be happy if someone had died? However he is a tiny bit lucky.
I think he is great because he:
-he defeated the vikings
-wanted to make peace with them
-he helped his people in battle
Even though he didn’t like vikings he shared his land with them..
I think Alfred was both. Great, because he fought the vikings and gave some land to them and Iucky because his brothers died but if they didn’t died he would have never been king.
I think King Alfred was lucky and great because he was lucky that his all brother’s died which made him king.
A reason for his greatness is he was the first king to fight off the Vikings.
A reason for his luckiness was most of the Vikings made a deal whit him.
A reason for his greatness was he fought for his people.
wow!I agree with you Sam !
I think King Alfred was great because he fought off the Vikings with his men. I also think that King Alfred was great because he gave some of his land to the Vikings.
I think King Alfred was both lucky and GREAT.
The first reason why he is lucky is that all four of his brothers died so he took to the throne.
The second reason is that when he was at the treaty the Vikings could have said NO.
The first reason why he is GREAT is that his kingdom Wessex was the only kingdom that hadn’t been invaded by the Vikings.
The second reason is that he drove off the Vikings from Britain.
So that is my opinion.
I think king Alfred deserved the title great for his braveness. He wasn’t a lazy king and he went to battle with his men. He fought for his people and his people fought for him.
WAS ALFRED GREAT OR JUST LUCKY?
Alfred was a bit of both in my opinion because he fought off the Vikings to maintain peace in Engiland. However his 3 brothers died when they were king. Alfred was great because he made people think of the importance of education and made schools for boys.
Alfred was lucky because he made peace with the Vikings most people wouldn’t and when he approached King Grotham he could have been shot with a crossbow when he approached.
I think King Alfred was both lucky and great.
I think he was lucky because if his brothers hadn’t died he might not have been king… He was also very talented – which is a stroke of luck!
I think he was great because he fought off the Vikings and because he thought education was important.
I think King Alfred is great and lucky because he wanted to make peace for his people, he did this by giving land to the vikings so that they could live among each other.
He was lucky because he escaped from the vikings during battle, he did this by hiding in the forest making it difficult for them to find him.

I think he was great and lucky .
He was great because he fought the Vikings and then made peace with them so that they could all live peacefully together. However he was lucky that he didn’t have to fight the whole of the Viking army.
He was also great because he had books translated from Latin to English and set up schools.
He was also lucky to become king .This only happened because his older brothers died.
I think he was just lucky because he only became King because his brothers died.
I think King Alfred was great because he fought with his soldiers against the Vikings and set up schools.
Alfred the Great was of course Great, or he would never have had statues built of him, or even be remembered as he is in history today. However it would be wrong to say that he was just great, and not lucky at all, because he was lucky to have become king at all as he had four older brothers who luckily for Alfred. all died within twenty years meaning that he could become King.
This was rare to happen, and still is today, as the fifth inline doesn’t often become king, as the ones before him produce heirs etc. But he was great, being an amazing leader to England and a wise one too.
He brought peace to England through negotiating with the Danes, and splitting England with Guthrum. All these actions set the foundation for England to unite, and this was when the unification of England began.
You could even say that England was lucky to have him as a king, because without him England’s future might have been very different.
So to conclude, Alfred was both a great ad noble man, but he only managed to get his position as king through luck alone!
